Frequently Asked Questions
Are these swords genuine antiques?
Every piece on japanese-blades.com is a genuine antique. Where papers exist (NBTHK, NTHK) they're noted in the provenance block on the product page. Where they don't, we explain the attribution evidence ourselves — a Saya label, a documented smith's mei, contextual dating, and so on.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes — UK, EU, and USA. International collectors are the majority of our buyers. See Shipping for full details, age-verified delivery requirements, and insurance.
Is it legal to own an antique Japanese sword in my country?
Responsibility for legal import lies with the buyer. UK and US import laws have specific antique exemptions; some countries restrict bladed-weapon imports entirely. Check your local rules before purchasing — we can't refund items that are refused at your border.
What if I'm not happy with the piece when it arrives?
Email us within 14 days of receipt. The piece can be returned, in the condition sent, for a full refund of the purchase price. Return postage isn't refundable. See Terms for the full policy.
Can I view a piece in person before buying?
UK-based viewing is possible by arrangement. For overseas collectors we offer a video walk-through — use the "Request more photos or a video walk-through" link on any product page.
How do I tell if a sword has been polished or restored?
Each product page lists what we know — polish date, restoration history, condition notes, papers where present. The provenance block on each piece is the source of truth. If something isn't clear, ask.
Do you offer translation of mei (signatures)?
Yes. Get in touch with a clear photo of the mei and we'll come back with a transliteration and translation — usually within a day.
