Unsigned katana of the Shinto period, attributed by form and construction to the mid-17th century — a generation defined by the consolidation of Edo-era smithing traditions.
Shintō-period blades (roughly 1596–1780) show the technical shift toward a brighter, harder steel aesthetic and more pronounced gunome or notare hamon compared to Kotō predecessors. A mumei (unsigned) blade of this era may have lost its nakago signature to shortening, or was never signed — both were common. Attribution and quality vary widely; the blade form and jihada are the primary diagnostic tools.
